As human beings, I think it is innate in each of us to strive to fix things. If someone is upset, we try to cheer them up. If a relationship is breaking down, we try to fix it. The problem typically lies though, not in the identified problem itself, but rather, in how we attempt to fix the problem. Many times, we try and try to fix something and it just doesn't work, partially because we become too emotionally involved and can't see clearly what is really going on or what needs to be done to handle it.
Therapy can offer another alternative. It allows an individual or a family to seek the advice of someone who is objective and who has an understanding of human behavior and patterns. Therapy is here to provide you with the tools to solve the problem and any others that may follow, effectively on your own. In other words, it's about empowering you in the end, and working myself out of a job.
